Summary

Ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation exposure did not significantly alter serum folate levels in healthy individuals. This suggests UVA exposure is unlikely to cause neural tube defects through folate deficiency.

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 24 healthy volunteers (Skin Type II).
  • Two groups: UVA-exposed (sunbed, 2 exposures/week for 3 weeks, 96 J/cm2 cumulative dose) and control (no exposure).
  • Serum folate levels measured via automated immunoassay at baseline, post-first exposure, and 24 hours post-sixth exposure.
