Area of Science:

  • General Practice
  • Medical Sociology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Bereavement poses potential health risks, linked to increased morbidity and mortality.
  • Understanding the health implications of spousal loss is crucial for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between spousal bereavement and physical and psychological health parameters.
  • To analyze changes in healthcare utilization following the loss of a spouse.

Main Methods:

  • A spousal bereavement register was established in a UK general practice.
  • Medical records of 100 bereaved spouses were analyzed for the 12 months pre- and post-bereavement.

Main Results:

  • The average number of consultations increased significantly after bereavement (5.99 to 7.60, P=0.01), primarily for physical illness.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Mean prescriptions for physical illness showed a minor increase (8.54 to 9.15, P=0.8).
  • Prescriptions for psychological illness saw a non-significant increase (0.76 to 1.34, P=0.09).
  • Conclusions:

    • Bereavement can be considered a medical issue due to its health impacts.
    • However, prescribing patterns do not fully reflect this, suggesting caution against over-medicalizing grief.
