Summary

Spirometry use in Manitoba is higher for asthma patients than for COPD patients, indicating better adherence to guidelines for asthma. Many COPD diagnoses may lack sufficient spirometry documentation.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Spirometry is crucial for diagnosing and managing obstructive lung diseases like asthma and COPD.
  • Understanding regional variations in spirometry use is important for healthcare planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe spirometry utilization patterns in Manitoba from 1991-1998.
  • To test the correlation between regional spirometry rates and the prevalence of diagnosed obstructive lung diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of fee-for-service spirometry billings from Manitoba Health.
  • Comparison of spirometry data with physician visit billings for obstructive diseases.
  • Examination of spirometry rates across different age groups, income quintiles, and 49 service use areas.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Approximately 14% of Manitobans underwent spirometry over eight years; rates were higher in Winnipeg.
  • Spirometry use was significantly higher in patients with asthma compared to COPD.
  • Regional spirometry rates correlated with regional asthma and COPD prevalence, particularly in adults.

Conclusions:

  • Spirometry use suggests closer adherence to guidelines for asthma management than for COPD.
  • A notable proportion of patients diagnosed with COPD may not have undergone appropriate spirometry.
  • Physician engagement appears to drive spirometry utilization for obstructive lung diseases.
