Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Radiology
  • Infectious Diseases

Context:

  • Paravaginal abscesses are uncommon during pregnancy.
  • Gartner's duct cysts can become infected, leading to abscess formation.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management.

Purpose:

  • To report the diagnosis and management of an infected Gartner's duct cyst presenting as a paravaginal abscess during pregnancy.
  • To highlight the utility of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in diagnosing pelvic masses during pregnancy.
  • To demonstrate a successful conservative treatment approach without pregnancy termination.

Summary:

  • A pregnant patient presented with symptoms of infection and a painful paravaginal mass.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was essential in diagnosing a paravaginal abscess secondary to an infected Gartner's duct cyst.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Transvaginal drainage of the abscess led to a successful pregnancy outcome with vaginal delivery.
  • Impact:

    • This case illustrates that paravaginal abscesses in pregnancy can be managed conservatively.
    • MRI provides valuable preoperative planning for pelvic abscesses extending beyond the vaginal walls.
    • Successful treatment preserves the pregnancy and avoids the need for invasive surgical interventions.
