Fractures: Bone Repair

Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. Summary

The number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for orthopaedic fractures has grown exponentially, indicating increased research in surgical interventions and therapies. Further trials are needed for fracture types requiring the most clinical guidance.

Background:

Orthopaedic fractures represent a significant clinical challenge.
Evidence-based practice in orthopaedics relies heavily on high-quality research.

Purpose of the Study:

To quantify and characterize the epidemiology of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) concerning orthopaedic fractures.
To analyze trends in RCT publication over time.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive literature search was conducted for RCTs published between 1966 and May 1999.
Identified RCTs were categorized by fracture type and intervention modality.

Main Results:

A total of 648 RCTs related to orthopaedic fracture surgery were identified.
The publication rate of RCTs has shown exponential growth, with the most recent decade accounting for more trials than all prior years combined.
Specific subsets of RCTs focused on adjuvant therapies (123) and anesthesia/analgesia/radiography (88).

Conclusions:

There is a positive and accelerating trend in the number of published RCTs for orthopaedic fractures.
Future research should prioritize fracture types with the greatest need for evidence-based guidance.
The expanding body of evidence from RCTs should inform systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines in orthopaedics.
