Summary

Interferon beta-1a (Avonex) significantly reduced the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS) by 44% in patients experiencing a first demyelinating event. Avonex also decreased new MRI lesions, showing its efficacy in early MS treatment.

Background:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Early intervention in patients with a first demyelinating event may alter disease course.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) abnormalities predict future MS development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of interferon beta-1a (Avonex) in patients with a first acute demyelinating event and MRI-predicted high risk of MS.
  • To assess the impact of Avonex on the development of clinically definite MS and MRI-detected lesions.

Main Methods:

  • The Controlled High Risk Avonex Multiple Sclerosis Study (CHAMPS) randomized 383 patients to Avonex or placebo.
  • Both groups received initial treatment with methylprednisolone and prednisone.

    • Treatment with Avonex supports the efficacy in preventing future neurological events and worsening brain MRI in high-risk patients.
