Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Diverticular disease, particularly sigmoid diverticulitis, presents significant management challenges.
  • Various surgical approaches exist, but the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic techniques require ongoing evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic-assisted sigmoid resection and anastomosis for sigmoid diverticulitis after acute inflammatory episodes have resolved.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients who underwent laparoscopic sigmoid resection following resolution of acute diverticulitis.
  • Data were collected from hospitals affiliated with the University of Miami.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Thirty-eight patients (median age 52 years) were included.
  • One intraoperative complication (splenic laceration) occurred, and 18% of cases required conversion to open surgery due to adhesions.
  • Patients tolerated a regular diet by postoperative day 3, with an average hospital stay of 4 days. No major complications or deaths were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic sigmoid resection appears to be a safe and feasible option for treating sigmoid diverticulitis once the acute inflammation has subsided.
  • The procedure is associated with excellent immediate postoperative recovery and a low complication rate.
