    Background:

    • Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
    • Assessing disease activity and monitoring treatment response are critical for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum lysozyme concentrations in patients with Crohn's disease.
    • To determine if serum lysozyme levels correlate with disease activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum lysozyme concentrations were measured in healthy volunteers, patients with active Crohn's disease, and patients with inactive Crohn's disease.
    • Levels were compared between groups using statistical analysis.

    • Mean serum lysozyme was significantly higher in active Crohn's disease (20.8 +/- 0.8 mug/ml) compared to inactive disease (10.4 +/- 0.7 mug/ml) and controls (8.8 +/- 0.4 mug/ml).
