Background:

  • Atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) is an uncommon condition in pediatric populations.
  • Understanding the natural history and incidence of ASA in children is crucial for appropriate management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of atrial septal aneurysm in a pediatric cohort.
  • To evaluate the natural course and potential complications of pediatric ASA, including resolution and development of atrial septal defects (ASDs).
  • To identify associated cardiac lesions commonly found with ASA.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of echocardiographic data to identify children with ASA.
  • Classification of ASA into types (1R and 2L).
  • Longitudinal follow-up of a subset of patients diagnosed with ASA.

Main Results:

  • Atrial septal aneurysm was identified in 1% of the pediatric patients studied (30 patients).
  • Type 1R ASA was observed in 16 patients, and type 2L ASA in 14 patients.
  • During follow-up, ASA resolved in 4 patients; 3 patients with type 2L ASA developed an ASD. Patent foramen ovale (PFO) was the most frequent associated finding.

Conclusions:

  • Atrial septal aneurysms are not as rare in children as previously thought.
  • Type 2L ASAs warrant close monitoring due to the risk of developing an atrial septal defect.
  • Routine echocardiographic follow-up is recommended for pediatric patients with ASA.
