Intraperitoneal involvement in rhabdomyosarcoma CT findings in a child
1Department of Radiology, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey.
Intraperitoneal spread of rhabdomyosarcoma is uncommon. Computerized tomography (CT) revealed peritoneal masses, demonstrating that ascites are not always present with this rare cancer presentation.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Radiology
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma.
- Intraperitoneal neoplastic involvement in rhabdomyosarcoma is infrequently documented.
- Further description of its incidence and imaging characteristics is needed.
Observation:
- A case of pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma with intraperitoneal neoplastic involvement was analyzed.
- Computerized tomography (CT) was utilized to assess the extent of the disease.
- Enhanced peritoneal and retroperitoneal masses were identified in specific anatomical locations.
Findings:
- The CT scan showed masses around the liver, spleen, in the paracolic gutters, and lesser sac.
- Notably, there was no evidence of ascites, mesenteric nodules, or omental caking.
- The absence of ascites did not rule out peritoneal involvement in this case.
Implications:
- This case highlights that ascites are not a mandatory sign of peritoneal involvement in rhabdomyosarcoma.
- Computerized tomography is effective in demonstrating the progression of peritoneal disease.
- Enhanced understanding of imaging characteristics is crucial for diagnosing and managing this rare presentation.
