Parent-managed interventions for autism showed limited IQ gains but significant improvements in adaptive behavior and language skills over 12 months. Further research is needed to optimize this model for young children with autism.
Area of Science:
- Developmental Psychology
- Pediatric Behavioral Health
- Autism Spectrum Disorder Research
Background:
- Parent-managed behavioral interventions for autism are under-researched.
- Limited data exists on the effectiveness of these parent-led approaches.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the outcomes of parent-managed behavioral interventions for young children with autism.
- To assess changes in cognitive and adaptive behavior scores.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of data from 66 children with autism receiving early intervention from 25 consultants.
- Longitudinal tracking of IQ, adaptive behavior, mental age, and language scores.
Main Results:
- No significant change in IQ scores observed after a mean of 31.6 months.
- Significant increase in Vineland adaptive behavior scores by 8.9 points.
- Across 12 months, progress was noted in mental age (5.4 months), adaptive behavior (9.7 months), and language (5.1 months).
- Children over 72 months did not achieve normal functioning (IQ > 85, mainstream placement).
Conclusions:
- Parent-managed interventions show promise for adaptive behavior and language development in young children with autism.
- The current parent-managed model did not replicate results from clinic-based programs.
- Effectiveness and professional support adequacy require further investigation.
