Summary

Anterior chamber phacoemulsification is a safe alternative to endocapsular cataract surgery. This prospective study found no significant differences in outcomes between the two techniques.

Background:

  • Phacoemulsification is a common cataract surgery method.
  • Endocapsular techniques are standard, but anterior chamber approaches are being explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare anterior chamber phacoemulsification with the conventional endocapsular stop-and-chop technique.
  • To evaluate safety and efficacy of anterior chamber cataract extraction.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective randomized masked clinical trial involving 60 eyes.
  • Compared phaco-out technique (nucleus prolapsed to anterior chamber) with stop-and-chop.
  • Assessed phaco time, power, inflammation, corneal edema, and endothelial cell loss.

  • No significant differences in mean nuclear hardness or power-to-time ratio between groups.
  • Mean endothelial cell loss was comparable: 11.18% (stop-and-chop) vs. 11.20% (phaco-out).

  • Anterior chamber phacoemulsification is as safe as endocapsular phacoemulsification.
  • The anterior chamber technique is fast and potentially easier to learn.
