Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Acute encephalitis is an inflammatory condition of the brain.
  • Polyneuropathy affects multiple peripheral nerves.
  • The co-occurrence of these conditions is rare.

Observation:

  • Three middle-aged patients presented with encephalopathy and flu-like symptoms.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis and elevated protein.
  • Brain MRIs showed characteristic symmetric lesions in the temporal lobes and thalami.

Findings:

  • Patients rapidly developed quadriplegia and areflexia within two hospital days.
  • Electrophysiologic studies confirmed motor polyneuropathy.
  • No causative viral or bacterial agent was identified.

Implications:

  • This case series highlights a potentially novel neurological syndrome.
  • Early recognition and further research are crucial for understanding and managing this condition.
  • The findings may prompt re-evaluation of diagnostic criteria for encephalitis and polyneuropathy.
