Encephalitis associated with motor polyneuropathy.

Summary

This study reports a rare combination of acute encephalitis and motor-dominant polyneuropathy in three middle-aged patients. The condition led to rapid quadriplegia and showed poor response to treatment.

Background:

Acute encephalitis is an inflammatory condition of the brain.
Polyneuropathy affects multiple peripheral nerves.
The co-occurrence of these conditions is rare.

Observation:

Three middle-aged patients presented with encephalopathy and flu-like symptoms.
Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis and elevated protein.
Brain MRIs showed characteristic symmetric lesions in the temporal lobes and thalami.

Findings:

Patients rapidly developed quadriplegia and areflexia within two hospital days.
Electrophysiologic studies confirmed motor polyneuropathy.
No causative viral or bacterial agent was identified.
