Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Science

Background:

  • Expulsive Hemorrhage (ECH) traditionally indicated poor outcomes in open globe surgery.
  • Modern surgical advancements have improved the prognosis for eyes experiencing ECH.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss the current management and prognosis of ECH during open globe surgery.
  • To emphasize the importance of prophylaxis and preparedness for ECH events.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current surgical techniques and their impact on ECH risk.
  • Discussion of immediate management strategies and secondary reconstruction protocols for ECH.

Main Results:

  • Immediate wound closure and modern secondary reconstruction significantly improve outcomes for ECH.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Despite advancements, ECH risk persists, necessitating surgeon vigilance and strategic planning.
  • Conclusions:

    • ECH is no longer synonymous with eye loss due to improved surgical management.
    • Prophylaxis via risk factor analysis and surgical planning is crucial, alongside preparedness for swift action if ECH occurs.
