    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Psychiatry
    • Medical Psychology

    Background:

    • Aggression and hostility are complex psychological constructs.
    • Understanding aggression in clinical populations is crucial for patient care.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess aggression and hostility levels in female patients using the Buss-Durkee Inventory.
    • To explore the relationship between aggression, hostility, remorse, and medical diagnoses.
    • To investigate the influence of demographic factors on aggression.

    Main Methods:

    • Administered the Buss-Durkee Inventory to 125 female patients in a general hospital.
    • Conducted factor analysis to identify underlying dimensions of aggression.
    • Analyzed scores across different medical diagnostic groups.
    • Correlated factor scores with demographic variables (social class, marital status, domicile, age).

    Main Results:

    • Overall aggression and hostility scores were at an intermediate level across diagnostic groups.
    • Few statistically significant differences were found between diagnostic groups, except for slightly lower scores in patients with blood disorders.
    • Factor analysis identified three factors: aggression, hostility, and remorse.
    • No differences in factor scores were observed between medical diagnostic groups.
    • Demographic variables did not explain the variance in factor scores.
    • A significant negative correlation was found between age and the aggression factor (r = -0.33).

    Conclusions:

    • Aggression and hostility levels are generally intermediate in this female patient sample.
    • Medical diagnosis does not appear to significantly differentiate aggression, hostility, or remorse factors.
    • Age is negatively correlated with aggression, suggesting reduced aggression with increasing age.
    • The study discusses suppressed aggression and its potential role in the development of organic illness.
