Summary

This study reports a successful double switch operation for superior-inferior ventricles, a rare heart defect where ventricles are stacked. This surgical approach, combining Senning and Jatene procedures, offers a new treatment option for this complex congenital anomaly.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Congenital Heart Disease
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Superior-inferior ventricles represent a rare cardiac malformation with a unique anatomical arrangement where ventricles are positioned vertically.
  • This condition often presents with associated anomalies, including atrioventricular valve abnormalities and abnormal ventriculoarterial connections, complicating surgical management.
  • Few cases of surgical intervention for superior-inferior ventricles have been reported due to the complexity of the anomaly.

Observation:

  • A rare case of superior-inferior ventricles with a coexisting double-outlet right ventricle ([S,L,L]) was identified.
  • The patient's complex anatomy posed significant challenges for surgical correction.

Findings:

  • A successful double switch operation, integrating the Senning and Jatene procedures, was performed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This represents the first reported instance of a double switch operation for superior-inferior ventricles in the medical literature.
  • Implications:

    • This successful surgical outcome demonstrates the feasibility of the double switch operation for treating superior-inferior ventricles.
    • The findings may encourage further investigation and application of this surgical technique for similar complex congenital heart defects.
    • This case expands the therapeutic options for patients with rare and challenging cardiac malformations.
