Summary

Latanoprost showed limited effectiveness for treating hemifacial spasms (HFS) in non-glaucoma patients. However, it may be a viable option for HFS patients who also have glaucoma.

Background:

  • Facial spasms, or hemifacial spasms (HFS), are involuntary contractions of facial muscles.
  • An observation suggested latanoprost, a prostaglandin derivative, might alleviate facial spasms in glaucoma patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of latanoprost in treating non-glaucomatous hemifacial spasms (HFS).

Main Methods:

  • An open-label, prospective study was conducted.
  • Patients with non-glaucomatous HFS received latanoprost treatment.

Main Results:

  • Most patients experienced minimal to no improvement in facial spasms.
  • Many patients required subsequent treatment with Botulinum toxin A.
