Summary

Thyroglossal duct cysts rarely appear in elderly patients, but when they do, malignancy is common. Early surgical removal is recommended for suspected cysts in this age group.

Background:

  • This series highlights an unusual presentation of TDCs in geriatric individuals.

  • A significant proportion of TDCs in elderly patients exhibited malignant transformation.
  • Malignancy rates in this elderly cohort appear higher than typically reported for TDCs across all age groups.

Implications:

  • Early and definitive surgical excision of suspected TDCs is crucial in elderly patients.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment may improve outcomes by addressing potential malignancy.
  • This finding warrants increased vigilance for TDCs in the geriatric population.
