Summary

Radiofrequency interstitial thermal ablation (RFA) is a safe and effective treatment for hepatic tumors. This study shows RFA achieved satisfactory results with minimal complications in 163 patients.

Background:

  • Radiofrequency interstitial thermal ablation (RFA) is an established technique for treating liver tumors.
  • Evaluating the safety and efficacy of RFA across different electrode types is crucial for clinical practice.

Observation:

  • 163 patients with primary or secondary hepatic tumors underwent RFA using various electrodes (RITA, LeVeen, Cool-tips).
  • Tumor necrosis was assessed post-treatment using dynamic CT or SPIO MRI.
  • Follow-up data from 72 patients over 6-24 months revealed a local recurrence rate of 5.6%.

Findings:

  • RFA demonstrated high efficacy, with 85% of patients requiring only one session for complete tumor nodule treatment.
  • The mean complete necrosis area achieved with the RITA Needle electrode was significant.
  • No fatal or major complications were observed; one case of pleural effusion resolved with drainage.

Implications:

  • RFA is a safe and effective minimally invasive treatment option for hepatic tumors.
  • The technique offers a favorable safety profile with low complication rates.
  • RFA contributes to improved patient outcomes in liver cancer management.
