Area of Science:

  • Medical Science
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Neonatology

Background:

  • Gastroschisis is a congenital abdominal-wall defect (AWD) characterized by herniation of abdominal contents through a defect in the anterior abdominal wall, typically to the right of the umbilicus.
  • While the majority of gastroschisis cases present with the defect adjacent to the umbilical cord, rare variations have been documented.

Observation:

  • This report describes a unique case of a neonate presenting with an unusual congenital abdominal-wall defect.
  • The defect was located in the left upper quadrant, significantly distant from an intact umbilical cord.

Findings:

  • The neonate exhibited an atypical presentation of gastroschisis, deviating from the typical right-sided or umbilical-adjacent location.
  • This finding highlights the anatomical variability possible in congenital abdominal-wall defects.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of gastroschisis presentations.
  • Understanding such rare variations is crucial for accurate diagnosis, surgical planning, and improved patient outcomes in neonates with abdominal-wall defects.
