    Summary

    Asthma symptoms developed in three individuals after exposure to psyllium powder during laxative manufacturing. Skin tests and bronchial challenges confirmed psyllium-induced allergic reactions and asthma.

    Area of Science:

    Background:

    • Psyllium, a common ingredient in bulk laxatives, is derived from the seeds of Plantago species.
    • Occupational exposure to plant-derived substances can trigger respiratory sensitization and allergic reactions.

    Observation:

    • Three patients developed asthma symptoms following occupational exposure to psyllium powder during laxative production.
    • These individuals had pre-existing reaginic skin test sensitivity.

    Findings:

    • Two of the three patients showed positive results on bronchial challenge tests using a psyllium extract.
    • This indicates a specific IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to psyllium.

    Implications:

    • Occupational asthma can be triggered by psyllium exposure in manufacturing settings.
