Summary

Arsenic ingestion is linked to specific skin cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. This study found no association between arsenic and malignant melanoma, suggesting cell-type specific carcinogenicity.

Background:

Arsenic ingestion has been linked to cancer for over 100 years.
Previous research indicates arsenic's carcinogenic effects are cell-type specific in the urinary system.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if arsenic's carcinogenicity is also cell-type specific for skin cancers.
To evaluate the association between arsenic exposure and different types of skin cancer.

Main Methods:

Ecological study conducted in 243 townships in Taiwan.
Arsenic exposure data from previous surveys.
Skin cancer cases identified via the National Cancer Registry Program.
Regression models used for data analysis, adjusting for urbanization.

A total of 2369 skin cancer cases (1415 men, 954 women) were registered between 1980-1989.
Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma showed an association with arsenic ingestion.
No association was observed between arsenic ingestion and malignant melanoma.

Arsenic's carcinogenicity on the skin is cell-type specific.
Findings align with previous studies on arsenic and urinary system cancers.
