The renin-aldosterone system is an endocrine system which guides the renal absorption of water and electrolytes, thus managing blood pressure and osmoregulation. Activation of the system begins in the kidneys with a small cluster of cells adjacent to the afferent and efferent blood vessels of the renal corpuscle. As the nephrons are filtering blood, juxtaglomerular cells monitor blood pressure. If they detect a decrease in pressure, they release the hormone renin into the bloodstream.

Summary

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) did not significantly impact plasma ascorbic acid levels in healthy postmenopausal women who take vitamin C supplements. However, HRT users without supplements showed a trend towards lower levels.

Background:

  • Postmenopausal women may have altered nutritional needs and metabolic processes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and plasma ascorbic acid levels.
  • To assess ascorbic acid status in healthy, non-smoking, postmenopausal women using or not using HRT.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving 55 healthy, non-smoking, postmenopausal women (aged 48-72).
  • Participants were divided into HRT users (n=34) and non-users (n=21).
  • Fasting plasma ascorbic acid levels and dietary/supplement intake were measured via questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in plasma ascorbic acid was observed between HRT users and non-users overall.
  • HRT users not taking supplements showed a trend towards lower ascorbic acid levels (54+/-16 microM) compared to non-HRT users (66+/-14 microM).
  • Plasma ascorbic acid levels were similar in HRT users and non-users who took supplements.

Conclusions:

  • HRT does not appear to affect ascorbic acid status in healthy, well-nourished, non-smoking postmenopausal women using vitamin C supplements.
  • Further large-scale studies, including case-control or intervention trials, are warranted to confirm these findings.
