False cytodiagnosis of bladder malignancy due to previous radiotherapy

Results from a urological cytodiagnosis service indicate that it is not possible to distinguish with any degree of certainty malignant from non-malignant irradiated urothelial cells in urine. It is stressed, therefore, that when urine specimens are sent for cytological examination, details of any previous irradiation should be given to the cytologist.
