Area of Science:

  • Biopharmaceuticals
  • Immunology
  • Drug Development

Background:

  • Etanercept is a soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor fusion protein developed by Immunex.
  • It is indicated for moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and polyarticular-course juvenile RA (JRA).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide an overview of etanercept's development, launch, and clinical applications.
  • To highlight ongoing research and potential future indications for etanercept.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical trial data and regulatory filings for etanercept.
  • Analysis of market launch timelines and sales projections.

Main Results:

  • Etanercept launched in the US in 1998 and EU in 2000 for RA, and in 1999 for JRA.
  • Phase III trials are ongoing for psoriatic arthritis, chronic heart failure, and Crohn's disease.
  • Projected sales indicate significant market potential, with ongoing supply assessments.

Conclusions:

  • Etanercept is a significant therapeutic agent for RA and JRA with expanding indications.
  • Ongoing research suggests potential for etanercept in other inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.
  • Market performance and supply chain management are key considerations for future growth.
