Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • Small incision cataract surgery (SICS) is a common procedure.
  • Iris prolapse is a rare but serious complication of SICS.

Observation:

  • This study investigated 12 cases of iris prolapse after SICS.
  • Factors contributing to iris prolapse were analyzed from patient cases and a national survey.

Findings:

  • Iris prolapse can occur after SICS, particularly with specific predisposing factors.
  • The study identified operative and perioperative factors associated with this complication.

Implications:

  • Increased vigilance in wound management is crucial for high-risk patients undergoing SICS.
  • Understanding contributing factors can help minimize the incidence of iris prolapse.
