Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Colorectal Surgery

Context:

  • Chronic anal fissures are a common condition requiring effective treatment.
  • Surgical interventions aim to alleviate pain and promote healing.
  • Fissurectomy and sphincterotomy are established surgical options.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of fissurectomy for chronic anal fissures.
  • To assess the incidence of postoperative complications, specifically fecal spotting and continence disorders.

Summary:

  • A study involving 534 patients with chronic anal fissures found fissurectomy to be the preferred surgical method.
  • Of 470 surgically treated patients, only 3.1% experienced postoperative fecal spotting after scar healing.
  • No other continence disorders were reported, indicating a favorable safety profile.

Impact:

  • Fissurectomy presents a viable surgical option for chronic anal fissures with a low complication rate.
  • The findings suggest fissurectomy can achieve good outcomes, comparable to or better than other reported methods.
  • This approach may offer an alternative to sphincterotomy, potentially reducing associated risks.
