Soft denture liners with viscoelastic properties improve chewing function for edentulous patients. Materials with higher loss tangent (tan delta) and shear storage modulus (G') offered the best results.
Area of Science:
- Biomaterials Science
- Dental Materials
- Prosthodontics
Background:
- Soft denture liners cushion forces for edentulous patients.
- Viscoelastic properties are hypothesized to enhance masticatory function.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effect of viscoelastic properties of soft denture liners on masticatory function.
- To compare the performance of different soft liner materials.
Main Methods:
- Determined viscoelastic properties (G', G'', tan delta) of 6 materials using a dynamic viscoelastometer.
- Assessed masticatory function in 10 subjects via bite force, chewing time/frequency, and visual analogue scales.
Main Results:
- Acrylic materials showed viscoelastic behavior; silicones exhibited elastic behavior.
- Masticatory function improvement order: acrylic permanent > silicone > acrylic temporary.
- Higher tan delta and G' correlated with better masticatory function.
Conclusions:
- Viscoelastic soft denture liners, particularly acrylic permanent materials, optimize masticatory function.
- Material properties like tan delta and G' are key indicators for effective soft liners.
