Insights
Moderate acute normovolemic hemodilution in cats did not affect intestinal oxygen delivery. This suggests that intestinal mucosa ischemia is avoided during this procedure, even with increased superior mesenteric blood flow.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Medicine
- Physiology
- Surgical Research
Background:
- Acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) is a technique used to reduce blood loss during surgery.
- The effects of ANH on splanchnic circulation, particularly intestinal oxygenation, require further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of moderate acute normovolemic hemodilution on intestinal blood perfusion and oxygen supply in a feline model.
- To determine if ANH leads to intestinal ischemia.
Main Methods:
- Fifteen domestic male cats underwent hemodilution using Haemaccel.
- Measurements included heart rate, mean arterial pressure, superior mesenteric artery blood flow (SMABF), and venous lactate concentration (LAC).
- Intestinal oxygen delivery (DO(2)), consumption (VO(2)), and extraction (EO(2)) were calculated before and after hemodilution.
Main Results:
- Superior mesenteric artery blood flow (SMABF) significantly increased post-hemodilution (P < 0.05).
- Intestinal oxygen delivery (DO(2)) and oxygen extraction (EO(2)) remained unchanged (P > 0.05).
- Intestinal oxygen consumption (VO(2)) increased (P < 0.05), and superior mesenteric venous lactate concentration (LAC) did not elevate.
Conclusions:
- Moderate acute normovolemic hemodilution with Haemaccel does not impair intestinal oxygen delivery in cats.
- The compensatory increase in superior mesenteric blood flow prevents intestinal mucosal ischemia during ANH.
- This study indicates ANH is safe concerning intestinal perfusion in this model.
Objective:
To study the effects of moderate acute normovolemic hemodilution on the intestinal blood perfusion and oxygen supply in cats.
Methods:
15 domestic male cats were hemodiluted with Haemaccel. HR, MAP, lactate concentration in superior mesenteric vein (LAC), superior mesenteric artery blood flow (SMABF), superior mesenteric artery and venous blood gas analysis were recorded and the intestinal oxygen delivery (DO(2)), oxygen consumption (VO(2)) and oxygen extraction (EO(2)) were calculated before and after hemodilution.
Results:
SMABF increased obviously (P < 0.05), intestinal DO(2) and EO(2) did not change (P > 0.05) but VO(2) increased (P < 0.05), and LAC in superior mesenteric vein did not increase.
Conclusions:
Moderate acute normovolemic hemodilution with Haemaccel do not alter intestinal oxygen delivery by increasing the superior mesenteric blood flow. It means that intestinal mucosa ischemia does not happen during moderate acute normovolemic hemodilution.
