Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Mental Health Research

Background:

  • Adjustment disorders are common diagnoses.
  • Suicidal behavior associated with adjustment disorders requires further characterization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize suicidal behavior in patients diagnosed with Axis I adjustment disorders.
  • To identify risk factors for suicidal behavior in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 119 patients with Axis I adjustment disorders.
  • Data collected from psychiatric assessments at the University of Virginia Hospital.

Main Results:

  • 60.5% of patients had prior suicide attempts; 96% were suicidal during admission.
  • Overdosing was the most common suicide attempt method.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Axis II diagnoses (borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder) were present in 67% of those with past attempts.
  • Conclusions:

    • Adjustment disorder with suicidal behavior is linked to high admission suicidality, involuntary hospitalization, and substance use disorders.
    • Axis II diagnoses are significant risk factors for continued suicidal behavior in patients with adjustment disorders.
    • Further prospective studies are needed to validate these findings.
