Background:

  • Canine dysautonomia is a rare neurological condition affecting the autonomic nervous system.
  • It presents with a range of gastrointestinal, ocular, and urinary signs.

Observation:

  • Two young female dogs exhibited vomiting, diarrhea, dysphagia, urinary retention, decreased tear production, and Horner's syndrome.
  • Physical examination revealed dry mucous membranes, decreased anal tone, and gastrointestinal hypomotility.

Findings:

  • Presumptive diagnoses were based on clinical presentation and diagnostic tests.
  • Histopathology confirmed canine dysautonomia by showing neuronal cell body depletion in enteric and parasympathetic ganglia.

Implications:

  • Proposed criteria can aid in the antemortem diagnosis of canine dysautonomia.
