A rare pilomatrixoma, a skin tumor, was found in a 12-year-old girl. Histology revealed a multinodular cyst-like growth, similar to a tricholemmal cyst budding phenomenon.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatopathology
  • Pediatric Pathology
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Pilomatrixoma is a benign skin tumor originating from hair matrix cells.
  • This case presents a rare multinodular variant of pilomatrixoma.
  • The differential diagnosis includes other adnexal neoplasms and cysts.

Observation:

  • A 6 x 3 mm hard deep nodule was surgically removed from a 12-year-old girl's cheek.
  • Histological examination revealed a multinodular, cyst-like proliferation.
  • Each nodule exhibited the characteristic structure and cytology of pilomatrixoma.

Findings:

  • The histological findings confirmed a diagnosis of pilomatrixoma.
  • The multinodular, cyst-like architecture was noted.
  • A comparison was drawn to the budding phenomenon observed in isthmus-catagen (tricholemmal) cysts.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case expands the understanding of pilomatrixoma morphology.
  • Recognizing the multinodular variant is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
  • The comparison with tricholemmal cysts may aid in differentiating similar lesions.
