Background:

Pre-eclampsia is a significant cause of maternal and fetal morbidity.
Calcium deficiency has been implicated in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia.
Understanding the role of calcium supplementation is vital for prenatal care.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the efficacy of calcium supplementation in preventing pre-eclampsia.
To assess the impact of calcium on the incidence and severity of pre-eclampsia.

Main Methods:

Prospective, open-label, randomized controlled trial.
100 normotensive primigravidae enrolled before 20 weeks gestation.
Intervention: 2g elemental calcium daily from 20 weeks gestation to delivery vs. placebo.

Main Results:

No significant difference in the overall incidence of pre-eclampsia between groups (18% vs. 16%).
Severe pre-eclampsia incidence was significantly lower in the calcium supplementation group.
No differences observed in maternal/fetal side effects or perinatal outcomes.

Conclusions:

Calcium supplementation effectively reduces the severity of pre-eclampsia.
It does not significantly alter the overall incidence of the condition.
Further research may explore optimal calcium dosage and timing for pre-eclampsia management.
