Summary

Silicone oil can enter the corneal stroma through defects in Descemet's membrane. This study observed silicone oil droplets within the stroma but not in endothelial cells after corneal surgery.

Background:

  • A patient with intraocular silicone oil deposits underwent corneal surgery, with sutures left in place for 7 years.
  • Corneal opacification necessitated a subsequent perforating corneal transplantation.

Observation:

  • Histological examination of the corneal button was performed using celloidin and paraffin embedding techniques.
  • Sections were stained with van Gieson stain to visualize tissue structures.

Findings:

  • Intrastromal silicone oil droplets were identified adjacent to defects in Descemet's membrane and corneal sutures.
  • No silicone oil droplets were found within the corneal endothelial cells.
