Summary

Sonography effectively diagnoses left hemicolon diverticulosis in most cases. Normal diverticula appear as hyperechoic wall protuberances with acoustic shadowing, though the wall is often not visible.

Background:

Diverticulosis is a common condition affecting the colon.
Accurate diagnosis of diverticulosis is crucial for patient management.
Sonography's role in diagnosing colonic diverticulosis requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the diagnostic capability of sonography for left hemicolon diverticulosis.
To characterize the sonographic appearance of normal diverticula.

Main Methods:

Prospective sonographic evaluation of 60 consecutive patients for left hemicolon diverticulosis.
Assessment of diverticula characteristics: number, diameter, echogenicity, and wall thickness.
Comparison of sonographic findings with endoscopic results.

Sonography correctly identified diverticulosis in 85% (28/33) of patients with endoscopic confirmation.
Diverticula averaged 8.7 mm in diameter with a wall thickness of up to 1 mm; the wall was often not visualized.
Hyperechoic diverticula with acoustic shadowing (39%) suggested fecaliths; colonic wall averaged 3.3 mm thickness.

Conclusions:

Sonography is a capable tool for diagnosing left hemicolon diverticulosis.
Normal diverticula are visualized as hyperechoic protuberances with variable acoustic shadowing.
The thin diverticular wall is frequently not discernible via sonography.
