Insights
Circulating intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (cICAM-1) plasma levels are elevated in Behçet's disease patients, particularly those with active disease. These findings suggest cICAM-1 may serve as a biomarker for disease activity and treatment monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Rheumatology
- Vascular Biology
Background:
- Behçet's disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology.
- Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) plays a role in inflammatory processes.
- Elevated levels of circulating ICAM-1 (cICAM-1) have been observed in various inflammatory conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between circulating intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (cICAM-1) plasma levels and Behçet's disease.
- To determine if cICAM-1 levels correlate with disease activity in Behçet's disease.
Main Methods:
- Plasma levels of cICAM-1 were measured using ELISA or similar immunoassay.
- A cohort of 44 patients diagnosed with Behçet's disease was studied.
- A control group of 30 healthy individuals was included for comparison.
Main Results:
- Patients with Behçet's disease exhibited significantly higher plasma cICAM-1 levels compared to healthy controls (P=0.001).
- cICAM-1 levels were markedly elevated in patients with active Behçet's disease versus controls (P < 0.001).
- Significantly higher cICAM-1 levels were observed in active Behçet's disease patients compared to those with inactive disease (P<0.001).
Conclusions:
- Circulating intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (cICAM-1) plasma levels are closely associated with Behçet's disease.
- cICAM-1 appears to be a reliable indicator of disease activity in Behçet's disease.
- Measuring cICAM-1 may be valuable for assessing disease activity and monitoring therapeutic response in Behçet's disease patients.
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between circulating intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (cICAM-1) plasma levels and Behçet's disease. Plasma levels of cICAM-1 were measured in 44 patients with Behçet's disease and in 30 healthy controls. cICAM-1 levels were higher in patients with Behçet's disease than in the controls (P=0.001). The difference was more marked between patients with active Behçet's disease and controls (P < 0.001). cICAM-1 levels were also higher in patients with active Behçet's disease than in those with inactive disease (P<0.001). cICAM-1 seems to be related to disease activity in Behçet's disease. It may be useful in assessing disease activity in Behçet's disease, as well as in monitoring response to treatment.
