    Summary

    Chest strapping improved lung function by reducing airway closure and increasing elastic recoil. This study investigated its effects on lung mechanics and regional lung volumes.

    Background:

    • Restrictive chest strapping is known to alter lung mechanics.
    • Previous studies noted increased lung elastic recoil and maximum expiratory flow at low lung volumes with strapping.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of restrictive chest strapping on lung mechanics and regional lung function.
    • To determine the impact of strapping on airway caliber and pleural pressure gradients.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied five young men undergoing restrictive chest strapping.
    • Measured lung mechanics, including elastic recoil and maximum expiratory flow.
    • Utilized xenon 133 to assess regional lung volumes and 133Xe boluses for regional distribution.

    Main Results:

    • Chest strapping increased lung elastic recoil and maximum expiratory flow at low lung volumes.
    • Strapping decreased maximum expiratory flow at a given elastic recoil pressure, indicating reduced airway caliber upstream from the equal pressure point.
    • Regional lung volumes and 133Xe bolus distribution were unaffected by strapping, but closing capacity decreased.

    Conclusions:

    • Airway closure decreased during chest strapping, and this was not the cause of increased elastic recoil.
    • The findings suggest that strapping increased the apex-to-base pleural pressure gradient.
