Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Odontogenic neoplasms

Background:

  • Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is an uncommon jaw cyst, accounting for approximately 1% of all jaw cysts.
  • COCs can manifest in central (intraosseous) or peripheral (extraosseous) forms.

Observation:

  • A case of peripheral COC presented as a painless, pink nodule on the gingiva.
  • Peripheral COCs typically affect older individuals compared to central COCs.

Findings:

  • Peripheral COC is characterized by less aggressive behavior than its central counterpart.
  • Surgical excision biopsy is a curative treatment for peripheral COC.
  • Histological examination revealing keratinized epithelium with ghost cells is key for diagnosis.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and treatment of peripheral COC ensure favorable outcomes.
  • Understanding the distinct characteristics of peripheral COC aids in clinical management.
  • This highlights the importance of histological analysis in diagnosing rare oral lesions.
