    Summary

    Suppressing subvocalization during memory tasks slightly impairs performance. However, speech sound encoding in short-term memory is independent of subvocal activity, even when suppression is required.

    Background:

    • Subvocalization, the internal pronunciation of written words, is a common phenomenon during reading and memory tasks.
    • The role of subvocalization in short-term memory encoding and retrieval remains a subject of investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of actively suppressing subvocalization on short-term memory performance.
    • To determine if speech sound encoding in short-term memory is dependent on subvocal activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Two groups of subjects performed an ordered recall task with consonant-vowel syllables.
    • One group (feedback) was trained to suppress subvocalization during the task, while the other (no-feedback) was allowed to subvocalize.
    • Electromyography (EMG) was used to monitor subvocal activity.

    Main Results:

    • The feedback group showed a significant decrease in subvocalization.
    • The feedback group exhibited a slight increase in memory errors compared to the no-feedback group.
    • Error patterns were consistent across subvocalization and non-subvocalization trials within both groups.

    • Actively suppressing subvocalization during a short-term memory task can lead to a minor performance decrement.
    • Speech sound encoding in short-term memory appears to operate independently of overt subvocal activity during the memory task itself.
