Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Prostate Health

Background:

  • Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis often presents with debilitating symptoms.
  • Conservative therapies frequently fail to provide adequate relief for patients.
  • Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) is an alternative therapeutic approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of TUNA for chronic nonbacterial prostatitis.
  • To assess TUNA's impact on patient-reported symptoms and quality of life.
  • To analyze changes in expressed prostatic secretions (EPS) post-TUNA.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-two male patients with refractory nonbacterial prostatitis underwent TUNA.
  • Pre- and post-treatment assessments included symptom scores, quality of life, and EPS analysis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Follow-up evaluations were conducted at 1 and 3 months post-procedure.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant improvements were observed in both symptom and satisfaction scores (P < 0.05).
    • Seventy-one percent of patients exhibited normalized EPS within three months of TUNA.
    • A majority of patients (78%) achieved a satisfaction score below 3 points.

    Conclusions:

    • TUNA presents a viable treatment option for chronic nonbacterial prostatitis refractory to conservative management.
    • The procedure demonstrated significant efficacy in improving clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
    • Further randomized trials and long-term follow-up are warranted to confirm TUNA's efficacy.
