Mandibular deformation during unilateral molar clenching can cause small, but potentially significant, forces on dental prostheses. This effect is negligible for natural teeth but may impact implant-supported bridges.
Area of Science:
- Biomaterials Science
- Dental Mechanics
- Biomechanics
Background:
- Long span bridges can fail due to abutment issues.
- Mandibular elastic deformation's impact on abutments is understudied.
- This deformation may create distortion forces on prostheses.
Purpose of the Study:
- To measure human mandibular arch elastic deformation during clenching.
- To assess the influence of this deformation on abutment and prosthesis fit.
Main Methods:
- Utilized charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras.
- Employed an image analyzing system to measure deformation.
- Subjects clenched on canines and second molars.
Main Results:
- No deformation observed during canine or bilateral molar clenching.
- Unilateral second molar clenching caused upward/inward movement of the non-pivot side.
- A 0.2 mm decrease in distance between measurement points was recorded.
Conclusions:
- Mandibular deformation magnitude is below the periodontal membrane's limit.
- Deformation's influence is negligible for natural root-supported bridges.
- Implant-supported bridges may require consideration of mandibular deformation.
