Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Gemcitabine is a widely used chemotherapy agent for various cancers.
  • It is generally well-tolerated with a manageable side effect profile.
  • Known cutaneous reactions include alopecia and maculopapular eruptions.

Observation:

  • A patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung developed an unusual skin reaction during gemcitabine therapy.
  • The observed reaction presented clinically in a manner that mimicked acute lipodermatosclerosis.

Findings:

  • This represents a novel, previously unreported gemcitabine-induced cutaneous reaction.
  • The specific presentation mimicked acute lipodermatosclerosis, a condition not typically associated with gemcitabine.

Implications:

  • Highlights the potential for rare and atypical cutaneous side effects from gemcitabine.
  • Clinicians should be aware of this potential reaction for accurate diagnosis and management.
  • Further investigation into gemcitabine's dermatologic toxicities may be warranted.
