Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Surgical Techniques
  • Hemorrhage Management

Background:

  • The square suture technique is a described method for controlling postpartum hemorrhage.
  • Previous reports indicated no complications associated with this hemostatic technique.

Observation:

  • A case of postpartum hemorrhage occurred after cesarean delivery for arrest of dilatation.
  • The hemorrhage was unresponsive to medical management and uterine artery ligation.
  • Hemostasis was achieved using the square suture technique.

Findings:

  • The patient developed pyometrium (uterine infection) four weeks postpartum.
  • Pyometrium was diagnosed during dilation and curettage.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The hemostatic square suture technique may be associated with the development of pyometrium.
  • Clinicians should be aware of this potential complication when using the square suture technique for postpartum hemorrhage.
