Summary

Porcine parvovirus (PPV) and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) are associated with multifocal interstitial nephritis in pigs. Detection of both viruses significantly increased the odds of kidney lesions.

Background:

  • Multifocal interstitial nephritis is a common kidney lesion in pigs.
  • The etiology of interstitial nephritis in swine is not fully understood.
  • Viral infections are suspected contributors to kidney pathology in pigs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between specific viral agents and multifocal interstitial nephritis in pig kidneys.
  • To determine the prevalence of porcine parvovirus (PPV) and porcine circovirus types 1 and 2 (PCV-1, PCV-2) in kidneys with and without lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Histopathological examination of 100 pig kidneys (50 with lesions, 50 controls).
  • Bacterial and leptospiral cultures.
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, PCV-1, and PCV-2.

  • Main Results:

    • Interstitial nephritis lesions, including follicular nephritis and vasculitis, were observed in 50 pig kidneys.
    • Bacterial and leptospiral cultures were negative. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus was not detected.
    • PPV and PCV-2 were detected in a significantly higher proportion of kidneys with interstitial nephritis compared to controls.
    • A strong association was found between kidney lesions and the presence of PPV (OR=7.5) and PCV-2 (OR=3.4), with a combined odds ratio of 22.7 when both were present.

    Conclusions:

    • Porcine parvovirus and porcine circovirus type 2 are significantly associated with multifocal interstitial nephritis in pigs.
    • The presence of both PPV and PCV-2 in the same kidney greatly increases the likelihood of developing kidney lesions.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms of these viruses in swine kidney disease.
