Summary

Isoflurane, a volatile anesthetic, protects the heart against infarction in a dose-dependent manner. Even low concentrations (0.25 minimum alveolar concentration) offer significant cardioprotection, with higher doses providing enhanced benefits.

Background:

  • Volatile anesthetics are known to precondition the myocardium, offering protection against myocardial infarction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether isoflurane confers myocardial protection against infarction in a dose-dependent manner in vivo.
  • To determine the minimum effective concentration of isoflurane for cardioprotection.

Main Methods:

  • Forty anesthetized dogs underwent 60-minute coronary artery occlusion followed by 3-hour reperfusion.
  • Dogs were randomly assigned to receive varying concentrations of isoflurane (0.0 to 1.25 minimum alveolar concentration [MAC]) administered prior to occlusion.
