Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Neurology
  • Comparative Medicine

Background:

  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is well-documented in dogs.
  • Limited case reports exist for feline IVDD.

Observation:

  • Medical records of six cats with confirmed IVDD were reviewed.
  • Radiographic findings included narrowed discs, mineralization, and spinal cord compression.
  • All extrusions were located in the thoracolumbar region.

Findings:

  • Surgical decompression via hemilaminectomy successfully removed compressive degenerative disc material in all cats.
  • Five out of six cats experienced good to excellent neurological recovery post-surgery.

Implications:

  • Feline IVDD exhibits significant similarities to canine IVDD.
