    Summary

    Testosterone and other steroids maintain sexual behavior and ultrasonic vocalization in rats post-castration. Estradiol dipropionate (OP) gradually inhibits vocalization, an effect that is reversible.

    Background:

    • Sexual behavior and ultrasonic vocalization are influenced by androgens.
    • The refractory period (RP) following ejaculation is a critical phase in male sexual behavior.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of different steroid treatments on sexual behavior and ultrasonic vocalization in castrated rats.
    • To determine the role of androgens and estradiol in maintaining these behaviors.

    Main Methods:

    • Five groups of rats were castrated and treated daily with various steroids (Testosterone propionate, 19-hydroxytestosterone propionate, Estradiol dipropionate, DHTP) or vehicle.
    • Sexual behavior, including ejaculation and RP, was observed.
    • Ultrasonic vocalization during the RP was recorded.

    Main Results:

    • Testosterone propionate (TP), 19-hydroxytestosterone propionate (19HTP), and Estradiol dipropionate (OP) maintained ejaculation and normal RPs.
    • Dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP) alone or vehicle treatment led to declined ejaculatory ability and increased RPs.
    • Ultrasonic vocalization was absent or reduced in rats treated with OP, but normal in other groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Ultrasonic vocalization may not be directly dependent on testicular androgens.
    • Estradiol dipropionate (OP), at high doses, exerts a gradual, reversible inhibitory effect on vocalization.
