Cancer screening participation is low for both Korean Americans and Koreans in Korea. However, Korean American women showed higher breast cancer screening rates compared to women in Korea.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Disparities

Background:

  • Cancer is a significant cause of mortality for Korean Americans (KAs).
  • Understanding cancer screening practices in Korea can inform culturally sensitive health promotion for KAs in the U.S.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare cancer screening knowledge and behaviors between Korean Americans (KAs) in Los Angeles and Koreans (Ks) in Korea.

Main Methods:

  • Descriptive survey of 140 KAs (Los Angeles, 1998) and 149 Ks (Pusan, 1995-1996).
  • Used a 58-item questionnaire in Korean and English to assess knowledge and practices.
  • KAs had resided in the U.S. for an average of 15 years.

Main Results:

  • Both KAs and Ks exhibited low participation in cancer screening.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Korean American women were significantly more likely to undergo breast cancer screening than Korean women.
  • No significant differences were found in cervical cancer or gastrointestinal malignancy screening rates between the groups.
  • Conclusions:

    • Data can guide healthcare professionals in developing educational tools for promoting cancer screening among KAs.
    • This study uniquely compares an immigrant population with its country of origin counterpart.
