Summary

Complex visual and somatosensory hallucinations can arise from damage to the right medial occipital lobe. This suggests that damaged brain areas may trigger abnormal network activity, not just reflect specific lesion locations.

  • A prevailing theory links elementary hallucinations to early sensory cortex lesions and complex hallucinations to higher-level cortical pathology.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with complex, non-stereotyped, multimodal (visual and somatosensory) hallucinations.
  • These hallucinations occurred after an acute ischemic vascular lesion in the right medial occipital lobe.

Findings:

  • The patient's complex hallucinations did not strictly correlate with the precise location of the cerebral pathology.
  • The lesioned area appeared to act as a focal point for abnormally activated neuronal networks.
