Summary

Apathy is linked to cognitive and motor decline in Huntington's disease (HD). Irritability and depression showed no correlation, suggesting some behavioral changes are intrinsic to HD progression.

Background:

  • Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.
  • Behavioral changes are common in HD, but their relationship to disease progression is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between specific behavioral dimensions and the severity of cognitive and motor impairments in Huntington's disease.

Main Methods:

  • The Problem Behaviors Assessment for Huntington's Disease (PBA-HD) was used to measure apathy, depression, and irritability.
  • These behavioral measures were correlated with established cognitive and motor assessments of HD severity.

Main Results:

  • The Apathy subscale of the PBA-HD demonstrated a significant correlation with both cognitive deficits and motor impairments.
